Mercury is debilitated in Pisces — precisely, 15° of Pisces is Mercury's deep-debilitation point (BPHS Ch. 3), exactly opposite Mercury's exaltation at 15° of Virgo. The tradition treats Mercury-in-Pisces as asking for conscious effort, never as a sentence: neecha-bhaṅga (cancellation) rules regularly overturn it — Jupiter well-placed, or Mercury in a kendra from the Moon, are textbook examples. Whether a cancellation holds for your Mercury is a fact of your chart, not of Pisces in general.
Mercury's nature, and where direction helps it
Classically Mercury is a conditional benefic — benefic on its own or in good company, taking on the colour of whatever graha it sits with; the most impressionable of the seven. And one layer no Pisces page can settle: dig bala (BPHS Ch. 27) gives Mercury full directional strength in the 1st house — the ascendant, the eastern angle — so the same Mercury-in-Pisces reads differently by the house it lands in, a fact of birth time, not of Pisces.

- The texts count Mercury-in-Pisces a challenged dignity — then immediately qualify it with neecha-bhaṅga (cancellation) rules that depend on the chart. Many charts carrying a debilitated Mercury also carry a textbook cancellation. So: not "bad" — unresolved until your Mercury is actually cast.
- I have Mercury in Pisces but don't relate to this — why?
- Because a Pisces placement is one layer of many around Mercury. The house your Mercury occupies, the aspects reaching it, Jupiter's condition as Pisces's dispositor, and whether any Mercury daśā has yet run in your life all shape the lived result.
