ONE QUESTION · A WORKED CHART
Does a 10-minute birth-time error change my chart?
Move a birth time ten minutes in either direction and some chart details may stay put while others change. Calculate the earliest plausible time, the recorded time and the latest plausible time, and compare degrees as well as signs. It is like enlarging a map: a small movement can stay within the same district while crossing a boundary visible at a finer scale.
A time recorded as 'about 8:30' carries uncertainty that should remain visible in the reading. Lagna means rising sign; Navamsa, or D9, is the ninth-part chart. The rising degree can cross D9 divisions without leaving its birth-chart sign. Planetary-period dates also depend on the Moon's exact degree, so the dates can move even when every sign name stays the same.

Example birth: 15 January 1990, 08:30 IST · New Delhi
For the fictional Delhi birth, compare 08:20, 08:30 and 08:40 IST. Capricorn remains the rising sign throughout. The Moon stays in Leo and Purva Phalguni pada 2, meaning that birth star's second quarter, so it remains in the eighth whole-sign house with the Sun as Leo's ruler. The ascendant nevertheless moves from 288.074291° to 291.097090° to 294.178793°, a total of 6.104502°. The standard ninefold mapping gives Gemini, Cancer and Leo as the respective D9 rising signs. Recalculating the starting Venus period and subsequent main-period boundaries puts them about 48 days later at 08:20 and about 48 days earlier at 08:40, relative to the 08:30 calculation.
- 08:20 IST

- Ascendant 291.097090°; Moon 139.074608°

For your own chart
Make two short lists: what stays the same across your plausible time range, and what changes. Here the Moon-sign starting point is stable; D9 houses and period boundaries need more care. Use that distinction to decide which parts of a reading your record can support.
These shifts belong to this example, not every ten-minute range. Keep the date, place and settings fixed during the comparison. Do not alter a recorded time merely to make a description fit.

Angles are rounded to six decimal places; arithmetic uses the saved full values. Period boundaries are displayed to the nearest second in IST. These settings describe the calculation, not the precision of a birth record.
Follow the calculation
- At 08:20 IST, the ascendant is 288.074291°. At the recorded 08:30 it is 291.097090°. Both are in Capricorn.
- At 08:40 it reaches 294.178793°. Across the full twenty-minute bracket, it moves 6.104502°.
- The Moon stays in Leo and Purva Phalguni pada 2 at all three times. The same sign labels therefore conceal a real change in degrees; finer chart divisions and period boundaries need a separate check.
