ONE QUESTION · A WORKED CHART

What is a Navamsa or D9 chart?

Kavya, a fictional reader, finds her Moon in Leo in the birth chart but Virgo in D9, and both labels come from the same birth position. Navamsa means ninth part; the D9 chart divides each zodiac sign into nine portions. Traditional astrologers use it alongside the main chart to assess planetary strength and partnership questions.

The main birth chart is called D1. Each D9 division spans 3°20′, matching the width and boundaries of a nakshatra pada, or quarter of a birth-star division. A pada therefore identifies a D9 sign. D9 is calculated from birth positions and read alongside D1; it does not begin at a particular age or replace D1 later in life. Phaladipika chapter 3 covers sign divisions.

Example birth: 15 January 1990, 08:30 IST · New Delhi

Kavya's D1 Moon is at Leo 19.074608°, or 139.074608° measured from the start of Aries. In the standard Parashari mapping, multiply the unrounded longitude by nine, then subtract full 360° circles. The example gives 1251.671474° before subtracting three circles and 171.671474° afterwards, in Virgo. Leo's ruler is the Sun; Virgo's is Mercury. In D1, the Sun is in Capricorn with Venus and Rahu, while Mercury is in Sagittarius with Saturn. Examine their D9 placements separately. Because the Moon occupies different signs in D1 and D9, it is not vargottama, the same-sign condition across these two charts.

For your own chart

Keep D1 and D9 labels side by side, then examine the relevant rulers and the rest of each chart. Distinguish a planet's D9 sign from its D9 house: the house layout needs the D9 rising point, which is particularly sensitive to birth time.

The D9 coordinate is a chart division, not a second physical Moon position. This Moon example is one part of a traditional reading, not a complete account of a partnership.

Angles are rounded to six decimal places; arithmetic uses the saved full values. Period boundaries are displayed to the nearest second in IST. These settings describe the calculation, not the precision of a birth record.

Follow the calculation

  1. Use the standard Parashari D9 mapping. For a longitude measured from 0° Aries, multiply by 9 and wrap the answer into the 0°–360° circle.
  2. The demo Moon gives 1251.671474° before wrapping. Remove three full circles, or 1080°, to get 171.671474°.
  3. The mapped value is in Virgo, so the demo's D9 Moon is in Virgo although its D1 Moon is in Leo. The D9 coordinate is a divisional mapping, not a physical Moon longitude.
