Methodology

How Esha shows its work.

Esha computes your chart with observatory-grade astronomical data, reads it strictly through cited classical Vedic texts, and tells you tendencies — never guaranteed events. Here is exactly how, and where the boundaries are.

How your chart is computed

Esha's chart engine computes your birth chart from NASA/JPL planetary ephemeris data (DE440s), in the Lahiri sidereal system — the ayanāṁśa the Government of India uses — with the Mean Node stated explicitly. Positions are cross-checked against the pinned real Swiss Ephemeris compressed backend across 25,000 deterministic charts dated 1900–2050: the maximum observed planet delta was 2.0137 arcseconds and the maximum observed ascendant delta was 7.8155 arcseconds under the shared stated Lahiri and Mean-Node convention. Raw Earth-centered ICRF states were separately compared with INPOP21a at 2,000 dates and Horizons/DE441 at 500 dates. DE440s and INPOP21a are separate integrations fitted to the same modern observational basis and share ICRF/relativistic conventions. Horizons is JPL-family, not independent of DE440s. This is corroborated against two independent planetary theories; no observationally-independent verification is claimed. Calculations are separately cross-checked against an independent reference implementation across 100 charts, covering the ascendant, planets, divisional charts, daśās, and ashtakavarga.

The engine itself is clean-room: no copyleft astrology library runs at runtime, and every chart is deterministic — the same inputs always produce the same chart, and every fix is regression-locked so accuracy can't silently drift.

For the specific checks behind these numbers — which report, what method, what result — see How we verified this engine.

Where the interpretations come from

Every interpretation Esha gives implements a rule with a named classical source — Bṛhat Parāśara Horā Śāstra and Phaladīpikā, the two texts we hold certified passage-level anchors for. We keep a running rule ledger that records, for every rule, its sources, how strongly the classical tradition agrees on it, and the default Esha uses.

Where the tradition genuinely splits into different schools, Esha shows you the default reading and names the contested alternative, instead of picking a side and hiding the disagreement. There is no single astrologer's opinion we check interpretation against — so we show our sources instead.

What we will never do

Some requests, Esha refuses outright, no matter how they're asked or rephrased.

Esha refuses requests that Indian law prohibits, and never issues doom statements.

How AI is used

Readings are generated from your computed chart using AI language models, with interpretations pointing to the classical rule behind them where relevant, and screened by safety systems before you see them — predictions that fix a specific date for events like marriage, childbirth, death, or disease are blocked. If your chart isn't ready yet, the app says so instead of guessing. Automated checks reduce but do not eliminate mistakes, so treat every reading as reflection, not instruction.

Who builds this

Esha is built by a small independent team in India. We publish our source citations and validation approach instead of testimonials, because there aren't any users to quote yet — check the methodology above rather than take our word for it.
