ONE QUESTION · A WORKED CHART

What does my current dasha mean?

A dasha is a planetary period in a traditional schedule, and to understand your current one you start with the period planet's own connections in your birth chart. Phaladipika describes both difficulties and possibilities for recognition or gains during Rahu periods, depending on its placement and the planets connected with it. So a Rahu period needs Rahu's house, its sign ruler and the planets alongside it before any of that applies to you.

A transit, by contrast, is a planet's position in the sky on a chosen date. Rahu's eighteen years in Vimshottari, the period system used here, contain shorter periods too. Mahadasha means main period, and antardasha means a subperiod within it. The fictional chart is in Rahu mahadasha and Rahu antardasha at 12:00 IST on 28 September 2026. Rahu's main period begins on 5 June 2024 at 19:43:34 IST and ends on 6 June 2042 at 10:28:25 IST. The Rahu subperiod ends on 17 February 2027 at 00:20:17 IST.

Example birth: 15 January 1990, 08:30 IST · New Delhi

Here Rahu is in Capricorn in the first house with the Sun and Venus. Venus rules the fifth and tenth houses, bringing learning and work into the reading; its association is a supportive factor to weigh. Capricorn's ruler Saturn is in the twelfth house with Mercury, adding expenditure to the discussion. Phaladipika 19.14–15 and the commentary at 19.21 describe a range of Rahu-period themes; 20.47–52 considers supportive associations. For this chart, that gives a specific question for reflection: how do your work plans serve your personal aims, and what resources do they require? These are traditional tendencies, not predictions.

For your own chart

Choose a focused question, such as whether your work plans fit your priorities and budget. Then examine the period planet's particular connections before applying a general description. The subperiod helps explain why the main-period label alone is too broad.

The sequence starts with Venus because the birth Moon is in Purva Phalguni, a Venus-ruled birth-star division. Your own schedule needs your birth details; its boundaries mark periods, not appointments for events.

Follow the calculation

  1. The demo Moon is in Purva Phalguni, a Venus-ruled nakshatra in the Vimshottari sequence. Its remaining arc sets the balance of Venus at birth.
  2. The later sequence reaches Rahu on 05 Jun 2024, 19:43:34 IST. Our reference instant lies after that start and before 06 Jun 2042, 10:28:25 IST.
  3. The first subperiod is also Rahu, ending 17 Feb 2027, 00:20:17 IST. The dated label is therefore Rahu mahadasha / Rahu antardasha, using the stated year length.
