ONE QUESTION · A WORKED CHART

Why are Rahu and Ketu always opposite?

Making plans with a partner means weighing your priorities and theirs, which is a familiar way to picture the first and seventh houses that hold Rahu and Ketu in this example. These lunar nodes are opposite for a geometric reason: they mark where the Moon's orbital plane crosses the Sun's apparent path, and those two crossings are 180° apart. Rahu and Ketu are calculated points, not physical planets.

In a whole-sign chart, opposite signs occupy opposite houses. Traditional interpretation looks at both ends of the nodal axis and follows each sign's ruler. Here the first and seventh houses connect personal direction with partnership. The rulers and other planets show what makes this chart different from another with the same axis.

The fictional chart uses mean nodes: Rahu is at 293.992244° in Capricorn, house one, and Ketu is at 113.992244° in Cancer, house seven. Add 180° to Rahu, then subtract a full 360° circle, and you get Ketu's position. Both are at 23.992244° within their opposite signs. Rahu shares Capricorn with the Sun and Venus; none of the other listed planets shares Cancer with Ketu. Capricorn's ruler Saturn is in Sagittarius with Mercury, while Cancer's ruler the Moon is in Leo. The two ends have different supporting connections despite forming one axis.

Matching degrees within opposite signs give you a quick calculation check. If two apps show different node degrees, compare their node settings. Mean nodes smooth out variations in the nodes' motion; true nodes include them. Both keep Rahu and Ketu 180° apart.

Your nodal houses need your birth time and the chart's house convention. Use their symbolism for reflection on the two life areas involved.

  1. Begin with mean Rahu at 293.992244°. Add 180° to get 473.992244°.
  2. Wrap the value around the 360° circle by subtracting 360°. The result is 113.992244°, the demo Ketu longitude.
  3. The signs are Capricorn and Cancer. In the Capricorn-rising whole-sign chart these are houses 1 and 7, preserving the same opposition in the house labels.
