What is the difference between rashi and lagna?
Meera, a fictional reader using our example chart, sees Leo on her family record and Capricorn beside the chart's rising marker, and both can be right. Rashi means sign and, in everyday Indian astrology, usually refers to the Moon sign; lagna means the rising sign, the sign on the eastern horizon at birth. Her Moon is in Leo; her lagna is Capricorn.
The two labels do different jobs. The Moon sign is the reference for Moon-based readings and transits. The rising sign anchors the birth chart's houses. When a record says janma rashi, it means birth Moon sign; a name-based sign label is a different entry. Finding the rising sign requires birth time and place as well as the date.

Meera's example Moon is at Leo 19.074608°, while the rising degree is Capricorn 21.097090°. Count Capricorn as the first whole-sign house and Leo becomes the eighth. Their rulers also lead to different placements: Capricorn's ruler Saturn is in Sagittarius in the twelfth house with Mercury. Leo's ruler the Sun is in Capricorn in the first house with Venus and Rahu. A general Leo horoscope does not include these Capricorn-based houses or Saturn's role.

For your own chart
Keep two entries in your notes: Moon sign and rising sign. Use the former for a Moon-based transit check such as Sade Sati, Saturn's passage through the signs before, containing and after the birth Moon. Use the latter to count the birth chart's houses. This often explains why two apparently conflicting labels appear on the same chart.
If the birth time is uncertain, check whether the rising sign changes across the plausible time range. Use these labels as starting points for reflection.

- Read the calculated eastern-horizon longitude, 291.097090°. It sits in Capricorn, so the lagna is Capricorn.
- For whole-sign houses, count Capricorn as house 1. Aquarius is 2, Pisces 3, Aries 4, Taurus 5, Gemini 6, Cancer 7 and Leo 8. The Moon is in house 8 without changing its Leo sign.
