ONE QUESTION · A WORKED CHART
Why are my Vedic and Western Moon signs different?
Why does one chart say your Moon is in Leo while another says Virgo? Usually the charts use different zodiac reference points: most Western charts use the tropical zodiac, measured from the March equinox point, while Indian Vedic charts commonly use a sidereal zodiac such as Lahiri, tied to a stellar reference. The Moon is in the same physical position, but the measuring scales give it different coordinates.
Before comparing signs, confirm that both results concern the Moon. A birthday horoscope usually gives the Sun sign. Then check the actual settings: some Western astrologers use a sidereal zodiac too. The Swiss Ephemeris documentation distinguishes the reference system and calculation settings; an app's name alone cannot tell you which it uses.

Example birth: 15 January 1990, 08:30 IST · New Delhi
For the fictional birth, the Lahiri Moon is at 139.074608°, in Leo. Adding the dated offset of 23.721451° gives a matching tropical longitude of 162.796059°, in Virgo. Leo spans 120°–150° and Virgo 150°–180°; this example crosses a sign boundary, although not every comparison does. In the Lahiri chart, Capricorn is the rising sign, or lagna, and Leo is the eighth whole-sign house. Leo's ruler, the Sun, is in Capricorn in the first house with Venus and Rahu. Changing the Moon's label to Virgo without recalculating the chart would lose that system's house and ruler relationships.
- Sidereal Moon
- 139.074608° — Leo
- Applied Lahiri offset
- 23.721451°
- Matching tropical longitude
- 162.796059° — Virgo
For your own chart
Keep each Moon sign with the settings that produced it. If two Lahiri calculations disagree, compare the birth date, time and place, then their calculation conventions. If you compare Lahiri with tropical, expect a coordinate difference rather than assuming someone entered your birth incorrectly. The calculation below makes the difference visible.
Compare the settings before interpreting a sign difference. Small decimal differences between calculation methods matter most near a sign boundary.

Follow the calculation
- Keep the instant and geometric position convention unchanged. The demo's sidereal Moon is 139.074608°.
- Add the applied zodiac offset, 23.721451°, to recover 162.796059° in the matching tropical frame. Use full values before rounding.
- Leo occupies 120°–150° and Virgo 150°–180°. The first value is in Leo; the second is in Virgo. This example crosses a sign boundary, though not every chart will.
