What does Taurus rising mean in Vedic astrology?

What does Taurus rising tell me about my birth chart? It means Taurus was rising on the eastern horizon when you were born, making Venus your chart ruler. The traditional temperament is steady, drawn to comfort and inclined to build value patiently: loyalty, well-kept possessions and commitments maintained after their novelty fades. In a whole-sign chart, each sign fills one house, with Taurus first; this sets the other house rulers, and it gives Saturn an unusually large part because Saturn rules both the ninth and tenth houses.

Lagna is the Sanskrit name for the ascendant. Taurus occupies the first bhāva, or house, associated classically with the body, constitution, self and general temperament. The sign's useful caution is inertia: keeping something because it still serves you well, or only because it is familiar.

Steadiness has a useful edge and a sticking point

Why does Saturn matter so much for Taurus rising?

Count forward from Taurus: the fourth house is Leo, ruled by the Sun; the seventh is Scorpio, ruled by Mars; and the tenth is Aquarius, ruled by Saturn. These are kendra, or angular, houses. The fifth is Virgo, ruled by Mercury, while the ninth is Capricorn, also ruled by Saturn. The fifth and ninth are trikona, or trinal, houses.

Saturn therefore rules both the ninth and tenth. It is the yogakāraka, the planet with a special constructive role through combined angular and trinal lordship. Classical readings include the running daśā, meaning planetary period. A Venus period has particular relevance because Venus rules the ascendant. Even then, an astrologer needs Venus's actual placement and the rest of the chart. The period draws attention to that planet's place and connections in the birth chart.

If you are looking at your own chart, locate Venus first and Saturn second. Distinguish their placement from the houses they rule. That small distinction prevents much confusion: Saturn can rule Capricorn and Aquarius here without occupying either sign.
