ONE QUESTION · A WORKED CHART

What is Manglik dosha, really?

Arun, a fictional reader, sees a Manglik label when an app counts from his Moon but none when it counts from his rising sign; the difference is in the counting rule. Manglik dosha is a traditional check of Mars's placement used in marriage readings. One common version checks houses 1, 2, 4, 7, 8 and 12, with reference points and exceptions varying between traditions.

Lagna means rising sign. Some traditions also count from the Moon or Venus. Ask which starting point the reading uses and which placements it recognises as reducing or cancelling the concern. Those exceptions are part of the assessment, not an optional extra after a label has been assigned.

Arun's Mars is at Scorpio 25.929863°. Counting whole signs, Scorpio is house eleven from Capricorn lagna, house four from the Leo Moon and house eleven from Venus in Capricorn. Only the Moon-based count meets the six-house rule above. Mars is also in its own sign, Scorpio. Its strength matters to the reading, but whether it counts as a cancellation depends on the tradition being used.

For your own chart

For this chart, the rising-sign and Venus counts do not meet the rule; the Moon count does, with exceptions still to assess. Ask for the starting point, house list and cancellation rule behind any Manglik label.

A placement check cannot decide relationship compatibility. Give communication, consent and shared plans more weight than a chart label.

Angles are rounded to six decimal places; arithmetic uses the saved full values. Period boundaries are displayed to the nearest second in IST. These settings describe the calculation, not the precision of a birth record.

Follow the calculation

  1. Using whole signs from the Capricorn lagna, count to Scorpio: Mars is in house 11. This does not meet the stated six-house screen from lagna.
  2. Starting instead from the Leo Moon, count Leo 1, Virgo 2, Libra 3 and Scorpio 4. The Moon-reference screen does meet the placement rule.
  3. Venus is in Capricorn, so counting from Venus again gives house 11. The same Mars produces different screen results without moving a single degree.
