Why can Virgo and Scorpio disagree even when they seem to understand each other's depth? Their earth–water symbolism is supportive, but their rulers have an uneven classical relationship: Mercury is neutral toward Mars, while Mars regards Mercury as an adversary. A favourable elemental picture is not the whole comparison.

Virgo is Mercury's earth sign. Its discernment and service take practical form through sorting, mending, improving and refining details. A critical eye used too severely, especially inwardly, is its limitation. Scorpio is Mars-ruled fixed water, associated with research, intensity and transformation through what is hidden. Its strength is depth held privately; its limitation is holding resentment in the same way.

Earth and water are traditionally supportive in this comparison, pairing grounding with feeling. Yet careful analysis and private depth can need different kinds of conversation. As an invented illustration, one person wants to examine a sequence of messages, while the other wants the concern behind them acknowledged first. Scorpio is third from Virgo and Virgo eleventh from Scorpio, counted inclusively. Bhakoot koota, the Moon-sign relationship factor in guṇa-milāna, the eight-factor matching system, awards full marks to 3/11. The traditional interpretation links effort with gains and regards it as workable and growth-oriented. Swapping the partners' Moon signs preserves the relation.

Fuller matching uses each Moon's nakshatra, or lunar mansion, both ascendants (rising signs), seventh houses of partnership, Venus, Mars and daśā calendars, meaning planetary periods. Sun-sign labels cannot establish that match.
