Cancer is a friendly sign for the Sun under natural planetary relationships, a useful distinction from exaltation or own-sign dignity.

Protective authority has a boundary

The Sun is classified as a natural malefic, a hot, kingly planet associated with strength and visibility rather than automatic ease. In a caring sign, solar authority can still be forceful. “I am protecting this” and “I get to decide for everyone” are different claims.

The Sun's full dig bala, or directional strength, occurs in the 10th house, the midheaven or southern angle (BPHS Chapter 27). Cancer by itself does not grant that strength. The Moon adds detail about the setting in which solar responsibility is expressed; its sign and house deserve a place beside the Sun in your reading.
